Former MVP, Rookie of the Year Andre Dawson earns Hall of Fame nod
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum announced the voting totals Wednesday afternoon for the class of 2010, and only Andre Dawson received the blessing of at least 75 percent of the voting baseball writers. Dawson won the Rookie of the Year in 1977 and the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1987 with the Cubs.
Dawson, nicknamed Hawk, came up with the Montreal Expos and spent 11 seasons with the Canadian team. He went to Chicago for six seasons before finishing his career with stints in Boston and Florida. In Dawson's 1987 MVP season he led the league in home runs and RBIs with 49 and 137 respectively.
In addition to swinging a big bat (438 home runs), Dawson was a skilled fielder and a fast baserunner. He won eight Gold Gloves as an outfielder and stole 314 bases in his 21-year career. This was Dawson's ninth year on the Hall of Fame ballot.
Many believed first timer Roberto Alomar would get the call, but he fell just a few votes shy of election. Pitcher Bert Blyleven was just five votes short of joining Dawson in the 2010 class.
