National News: Powerhouses LSU, Texas Meet For National Championship
June 22, 2009
College World Series best-of-three championship series begins tonight in Omaha
Two teams remain standing in the quest for an NCAA baseball championship, and it's the matchup most fans hoped for when the College World Series got underway. Tonight, LSU and Texas will battle it out in Game 1 of the best-of-three National Championship series.
Texas was the No. 1 national seed going into the tournament, but they haven't made it easy on themselves in the CWS. Against Arizona State, the Longhorns were down 6-0 but came back to win easily 10-6. The two teams faced off again for a spot in the finals, and Arizona State had a ninth inning lead before Texas hit two solo home runs to move on to the final.
On the other side of the coin, LSU cruised into the finals with convincing wins against Virginia, Arkansas and then Arkansas again for a spot in the finals. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 32-11 going into their finals matchup against Texas.
Texas coach Augie Garrido looks to claim the Longhorns' seventh national title while LSU coach Paul Mainieri wants to capture the Tigers' sixth championship this week. Game 1 is tonight at 7 with Game 2 tomorrow night at 7. If necessary, the third and final game will be played Wednesday night at 7. All games are on ESPN.
