Eight Teams Advance to National Youth Baseball Championships Quarterfinals
After an exciting day of pool play Friday at the National Youth Baseball Championships, the quarterfinals are set as 12 teams have been paired down to just eight.
The Banditos Black out of Houston, Texas came to Memphis as the reigning back-to-back champions in this event, and they played like the favorites. The Banditos won their two pool play games over TC Nationals Force and the Ohio Prospects by a combined score of 31-7. They blew out the Ohio Prospects 18-0 in their second and final pool play game.
The game of the day was between Team MVP and LIDS Indiana Bulls Black with the Bulls winning 8-7 in nine innings. Down 6-3 in the bottom of the 6th inning, Stephen Hazlett hit his second home run of the day. This one was a three-run bomb that tied the game. The two teams remained tied until the ninth inning when the Bulls plated a run in the bottom half on an outfield error. Two MVP outfielders collided on a fly ball allowing the winning run to score from second.
Team MVP may have lost the game, but they got a bit of payback in the end. The Miami-based team won a tiebreaker over the Bulls to move on to the quarterfinals, leavin the Indiana boys on the outside looking in.
Other teams advancing to the quarterfinals were EM Majors, Diamond MVP, BPA DeMarini Elite, Lamorinda Spartans, TC Nationals Force and SY Titans.
Live television coverage begins today on CBS Sports Network with two quarterfinal games. CBS Sports Network will also televise the two semifinals, the championship and the NYBC All-Star Game.
