Memphis Tigers, Germantown Giants Headline USSSA September Showdown

If you’re looking for some great travel baseball action this weekend then look no further than the USSSA September Showdown in Southaven, Mississippi. The 13U age group will feature nine tough teams from both Tennessee and Mississippi, battling for those ever-important USSSA points that determine World Series seeding at the end of the season.

At a glance it looks like the Memphis Tigers are the favorites to win it all, coming off a 34-15 season, but they will definitely have their hands full with their competition. The Tigers have played in two tournaments so far this fall with a 6-2 record but will be searching for that first tournament victory this weekend.

The team most likely to give the Tigers a run for their money is another Tennessee squad, the Germantown Giants. The core of the Giants has been playing together since they were 7-years-old and are no strangers to winning. Since they’ve come together in 2007 the Giants have won 205 games in USSSA alone and compiled 18 tournament championships. Their best season so far came when they were 10U, going 56-15 with 5 championships. They have their sights set on topping that mark, looking for an early win in their 2013 campaign.

In addition to these two national contenders, keep an eye on HOUNDDOGS Baseball, who have looked very impressive so far this season. They’re a bit of a dark horse as a AAA team, but they have yet to lose a game thus far, going 8-0 with two tournament titles. If the Giants and Tigers somehow get matched up early in bracket play, the HOUNDDOGS could certainly make a nice run towards the title.

In addition to the three aforementioned teams, the tournament field includes the Blackhorse 13s, Redbirds Baseball, Mississippi Rebels, Tupelo Rangers, Arlington Tigers – Haley, and Orange Crush II.
