Mississippi Rebels Defend Home Turf at USSSA September Showdown
In their first tournament of the 2013 season, the Mississippi Rebels claimed victory at the USSSA NIT September Showdown, defeating the Germantown Giants in the championship game. The ten-team tournament at Snowden Grove Park featured some elite ball clubs from both Mississippi and Tennessee but it was the Rebels’ steady play that earned them the victory this weekend.
The championship game was a matchup of two unbeaten teams, and heading into the championship game the Rebels looked to be the underdogs. Such would not be the case though, as the Rebels came away with a decisive 10-2 win over the Giants.
The Giants had outscored their competition 33-6 headed into the championship game, but the Rebels bats were hot, scoring almost twice as many as the Giants had let up all tournament.
Never scoring less than seven runs in any game, the Rebels beat Redbirds Baseball, Hounddogs Baseball, and the Tupelo Rangers before their championship matchup. It was that offensive consistency that earned them the highest average of runs per game in the tournament (9.5), and coupled with their defense, they also earned the best scoring differential as well (6.75)
The Rebels certainly got started off on the right foot, finishing with a team total of 38 runs scored and 11 allowed, and they’ll be looking to keep using that balanced attack to help them win tournaments all year.
