NYBC Race for the Crown Kicks off this Weekend with Loaded Field

The first leg of the NYBC Race for the Crown begins this weekend Feb. 15-17 at VTV Sports Complex in Castaic, California as 16 teams look to make their first step toward an automatic bid into the National Youth Baseball Championships.

Teams will compete this weekend with 12 of the 16 moving on to play the second leg on April 5-6. The final eight from the second leg will then compete in the Race for the Crown Championship on Memorial Day weekend May 24-26 to see who will claim the two NYBC automatic bids.

The 16-team field is loaded with many of the top teams out west competing. SGV Hustle, BPA DeMarini, Lamorinda Immortals and Las Vegas Rebels are the top four seeds, respectively. The No. 5-8 seeds belong to VSA Vipers, Upland Nationals, Sandlot Baseball, and San Diego Show and Team Mizuno tied for the No. 8 seed. Participating coaches voted on the No. 5-8 seeds.

With this many top teams, it’s certainly going to be a competitive weekend. Any one of the top eight teams could win this weekend, and don’t discount the other eight teams that will be there. Winning this weekend gives the champion a free berth into the NYBC Play-In tournament in case that team doesn’t win one of the two automatic bids on Memorial Day weekend. Teams want to make sure they are part of the top 12 so they can move on to the 2nd leg of the Race for the Crown.

Besides the top four seeds, two teams to look out for this weekend are San Diego Show and Upland Nationals. The Show played outstanding baseball in the AAU President’s Day Warm-Up just a week ago. They defeated SGV Hustle, 8-7, in the semifinals and then run-ruled BPA DeMarini in the title game, 12-1. The Upland Nationals have also been playing very solid baseball this past fall and early 2014.

Pool play begins at 8 a.m. PT Saturday at VTV Sports Complex. Baseball Youth will have updates throughout the weekend and scores posted constantly on Twitter.
