SY Titans Capture 2013 NYBC Title

Test2

There’s something about Memphis, Tennessee that brings out the best in the SY Titans. The team from Santa Ynez, California captured the 2013 National Youth Baseball Championships title Monday night with a dominant 12-2 win over BPA DeMarini Elite, moving their record at the Gameday Baseball complex to 10-0 in less than two months.

The Titans traveled to Memphis in July and qualified for this year’s event at the NYBC Last Chance Play-In. They went 5-0 in that event and then ran off five straight for the NYBC crown.

From start to finish, it was the Titans night. Cooper Benson led off the bottom of the first with a solo shot over the center field fence to give the Titans a lead they would never surrender. Benson was the game’s Most Valuable Player as he went 2-for-2 with two homers and four RBI. He hit his second blast, a three-run home run, in the second inning.

Alejandro Murillo started for SY and was dominant throughout his five innings of work. Murillo didn’t allow a baserunner until the fifth inning when BPA’s Cameron Repetti doubled. BPA DeMarini collected four hits and two runs in the inning, but Murillo stayed in and limited the damage.

With the score at 9-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Titans struck for three more runs to bring the mercy rule in effect. Kai Murphy ended the game with an RBI single, and the celebration was on. The Titans mobbed each other near the pitcher’s mound pouring water on each other and exchanging high fives and hugs.

Nash Johnson and Jacob Barton each collected RBIs for BPA DeMarini Elite.

The game was televised live on CBS Sports Network and streamed online by MLB.com. To watch a replay of the title game or any of the other televised games, go to YouthMajors.com.

Baseball Youth will also have extensive coverage of this year’s National Youth Baseball Championships in Issue 5 due out in late September.
