Triple Crown Sports Kicks Off New Year With Winter Nationals
Triple Crown Sports hosted its first major event of the 2013 baseball season Jan. 18-21 as 60 teams from around the country made the journey to sunny Clearwater, Florida for the Triple Crown Winter Nationals.
In the 10U division, the South Florida Hitmen (Wellington, Florida) dominated their way to the title with two pool play wins by a combined score of 15-3 and then three straight wins in bracket play. Their final two games were against The Meteors out of Bradenton, Florida, and those games were anything but a walk.
In the first game, the Hitmen won 5-3. The Meteors came back the following day and defeated the St. Pete Thunder to set up the rematch with the Hitmen. Again, it was another close game, but the Hitmen won again 7-5 to claim the title.
PTI Maniacs Baseball from Tampa, Florida won the 12U division. Only six teams competed, but there was some stiff competition. The Maniacs dropped their first game of the tournament to the Bay Sox (Zephyrhills, Florida), 6-5, but that turned out to be the Maniacs’ only loss.
They won their next two games and their semifinal game to set up a rematch with the Bay Sox. This time, the Maniacs earned the victory in a tight 7-5 contest.
The 13U division had the most teams with 20, 1/3 of the total number of teams in the entire event. Team Bushnell out of Bushnell, Florida went 2-1 in pool play, defeated the No. 1 seed in bracket play and went on to win the championship.
